Overview
The Office of Academic & Student Services, under
the Northwestern University Department of Athletics
and Recreation (NUDAR), provides tutorial assistance
to all varsity student-athletes. The N'CAT is a vital
component of the student-athlete Study Skills program.
The main goals of Study Skills are to provide an educational
structure, time management skills, and structured study
sessions; promote effective study habits; clarify course
material; and assist student-athletes with exam preparation.
Study Skills for freshman and other required upper-class
student-athletes meet Monday through Thursday nights
at the University Library from 7:00pm-10:00pm and consists
of three different tutor resources: drop-in tutoring,
learning teams, and individual tutoring (see
descriptions below). Each of these tutoring services
works in conjunction to provide the best course assistance
for student-athletes. It is important to note that the
Study Skills program is NOT intended to replace regular
class attendance, completion of homework or exams, or
attendance at class review sessions; rather, is it intended
to supplement these activities.
Three Types of Tutoring
The three tutoring services offered are:
DROP-IN TUTORING: Geared for student-athletes
who do not need regular daily or weekly assistance.
The primary job of a drop-in tutor is to offer basic
review, feedback, and/or suggestions to student-athletes,
rather than providing a basis for understanding difficult
course material (which is provided during learning
teams and individual tutoring).
LEARNING TEAMS: These are small group
reviews lead by a learning leader/tutor. The group
generally consists of 5-10 student-athletes enrolled
in the same class. Learning teams regularly meet once
or twice per week to discuss weekly lecture notes
and/or reading material. Additional sessions are periodically
scheduled during midterm and final exam preparations.
INDIVIDUAL TUTORING: One-on-one tutoring
with a student-athlete to cover specific course material.
This service must be requested through the tutoring
coordinator.
What is Expected of N'CAT Tutors
The Office of Academic & Student Services devotes
a considerable amount of time and effort in selecting
the tutors for the N'CAT Program. Each tutor should:
have the ability to engage the student-athlete,
as well as explain and demonstrate difficult course
material;
demonstrate professional behavior
at all times- including being punctual, adequately prepared,
in control, etc.;
be adaptable to various styles
of learning and modify their teaching technique accordingly;
remain ethical in their academic
dealings and NEVER complete assignments for the students
being tutored; and
under NO circumstances disclose
or otherwise compromise any confidential information
about the student-athlete acquired during the study
session (academically related or not).
Tutors for the Study Skills Program are accepted year-round
on a rolling basis. The first step toward joining the
N'CAT is to Apply Online
to Become a Tutor.
