- Northwestern commemorates founders' first meeting by dedicating a historical marker at the corner of Clark and Lake streets in Chicago's loop.
2002
- The McCormick Tribune Center is completed.
- NU Debate Society wins first place at the National Debate Tournament.
2005
- The women's lacrosse team wins its first of four straight NCAA titles.
- The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center is completed.
2006
- U.S. Senator Barack Obama gives the commencement address.
2008
- Northwestern begins offering journalism and communication degrees at its new branch campus in Qatar.
- Northwestern's research grants reach $438.8 million, the highest in the University's history.
- The Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center is completed.
- The School of Music is renamed the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music in honor of the President and his wife.
2009
- Morton O. Schapiro becomes University President.
