'Tuning the Planet'

Cellist Michael Fitzpatrick will perform in concert at Alice Millar Chapel Nov. 11

By Judy Moore

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Acclaimed cellist, composer and producer Michael Fitzpatrick will perform his original compositions and musical meditations on the music of Bach, Ravel, Faure, Schubert and Casals during a sacred concert on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus.

The concert will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road.

The evening program will include video highlights from “TUNING THE PLANET,” the forthcoming film Fitzpatrick produced. The film was inspired by the friendship between the Dalai Lama and American author and Trappist monk Thomas Merton (1915-1968), one of the most influential 20th-century Catholic writers.

Hailed by The New York Times for his “virtuosity, a sense of humor and ear for musical dialogue,” Fitzpatrick has worked musically with the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, for the past 15 years.

Fitzpatrick has performed as a soloist on the United States Capitol West Lawn and at the Hollywood Bowl, National Cathedral, United Nations and Lincoln Center and around the world. For more on Fitzpatrick, visit www.michaelfitzpatrick.com.

A Northwestern alumnus, Fitzpatrick received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music in 1986 and a Performer’s Certificate in 1994. He is the recipient of the Prince Charles Award for Outstanding Musicianship conferred by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.

The suggested Nov. 11 concert donation is $20 for the general public and $10 for students. Contributions can be made at the door on the night of the concert.

Reservations can be made by emailing milleniamusic@mac.com or by phoning (312) 342-2345.
