Menahem Pressler Piano Master Class Open To Public

EVANSTON, Ill. --- World-renowned pianist and pedagogue Menahem Pressler will share his knowledge and expertise with Northwestern University students Wednesday, April 27, when he leads a master class on the Evanston campus.

Open to the public, the two-part 5 p.m. piano master class will devote two hours to chamber music and two hours to solo repertoire, separated by a brief break. The sessions will take place in Lutkin Hall at 700 University Place. Admission to the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music event is free.

A founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio, Pressler came to prominence in 1946 when he was awarded first prize at the Debussy International Piano Competition. In 1955, he made his debut as a chamber musician at the Berkshire Music Festival, appearing as pianist with the Beaux Arts Trio. The trio toured consistently for 53 years and, in 1997, was honored as Musical America’s Ensemble of the Year.

Pressler, who made more than 30 solo recordings, was awarded Germany’s highest honor in 2005, the Cross of Merit, and France’s highest cultural honor, the Commandeur in the Order of Arts and Letters award. The six-time Grammy nominee also received a lifetime achievement award from Gramophone magazine.

Pressler, who now teaches at Indiana University, currently holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Music as the Charles Webb Chair of the piano faculty. He continues to serve on the juries of major international piano competitions, and presents master classes throughout the world.
