Between Ideology and Pragmatism

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Holocaust scholar Francis Nicosia will deliver the Theodore Zev Weiss Holocaust Educational Foundation Lecture Tuesday, May 10, at Northwestern University.

His lecture, “Between Ideology and Pragmatism: Zionism in Nazi Jewish Policy before the ‘Final Solution,’” will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the McCormick Tribune Center Forum, 1870 Campus Drive, on the University’s Evanston campus. Free and open to the public, it is presented by the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

Nicosia is the Raul Hilberg Distinguished Professor of Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont and author of “Zionism and Anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany” and “The Third Reich and the Palestine Question.” He is the co-author of “The Columbia Guide to the Holocaust.”

A Peace Corps volunteer in Libya in the 1970s, Nicosia taught English and history in a German high school before studying for his Ph.D. in history from Montreal’s McGill University. His numerous articles in English and German have appeared in scholarly journals and collections, including six essays in “The Leo Baeck Institute Yearbook,” the preeminent journal on Central European Jewish History.

Nicosia has received many grants and fellowships for research in Germany, Israel, England and the United States, including two Senior Fulbright Research Awards and a Charles Revson Foundation Fellowship at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies. 

The Theodore Zev Weiss Holocaust Educational Foundation recently became part of Northwestern University. Originally established in 1980 by Holocaust survivors, their children and their friends, the foundation’s mission is to preserve and promote awareness of the Holocaust.
