Message from President Schapiro Regarding Japan

As I’m sure many of you have been doing, I have been following closely the tragic aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last week. On behalf of Northwestern University, I offer our sympathy to everyone affected by the recent disaster.

It does not appear that any Northwestern students currently studying in Japan were in the area most severely affected, and the good news is that our students are safely accounted for. However, I’m sure that our alumni in Japan are feeling the effects of this tragedy. In addition, our students, faculty and staff here have friends or family who are being severely affected by the events. As a result, I urge all members of the Northwestern community to support the worldwide relief efforts.

While next week is spring break, I anticipate that members of the Northwestern community will be organizing additional activities during spring quarter. As our assistance is badly needed, I hope that all members of the Northwestern community will join me in supporting these efforts.
