Northwestern Basketball Teams Advance in NIT

National Invitation Tournament action continues for Wildcats this weekend

By Matt Paolelli

The Wildcats are still on the prowl in their quest for glory in the National Invitation Tournament. The men's basketball team advanced to the NIT quarterfinal round after their 85-67 victory Saturday against top-seeded Boston College. The women's team will play their second round game against Alabama at 2 p.m. (CST) Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Senior Michael Thompson scored 22 points and all five starting players scored in double figures to give Boston-area Northwestern alumni and fans something to cheer about. The victory matches a team record for 20 wins in a season and marks the deepest playoff run in the team's history.

In the first round of the tournament, the men’s team defeated Milwaukee 70-61 Wednesday night on the strength of junior John Shurna’s 25-point performance and senior Michael Thompson’s 20 points and six assists.

The Wildcats advance to take on the winner of Monday's contest between Washington State and Oklahoma State for the right to advance to the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The women’s team cruised to an 89-63 victory over Creighton Thursday night with the help of senior Amy Jaeschke’s 15th double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
