Northwestern Sets 2011-2012 Costs

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Undergraduate tuition at Northwestern University will increase 4.4 percent to $41,592 for the 2011-2012 academic year from the current year’s $39,840, University officials announced today.

Room and board rates will increase 4.4 percent to $12,780 from $12,240 for an undergraduate student living in a double room and on a 19-meal-per-week board plan. Approximately 4,100 of Northwestern’s 8,400 undergraduate students live in University residence halls.

Total undergraduate tuition, fees, room and board at Northwestern University will increase 4.4 percent to $54,763 in 2011-2012 from the current year’s $52,463.

The funds will help to meet students’ financial aid needs, which continue to increase at a more rapid rate than tuition. The University will provide more than $106 million in scholarships and grants to undergraduates in 2011-12, an increase of 13 percent from the current year. Financial aid for undergraduate students has increased by 56 percent from $68 million in 2005-2006. Approximately half of undergraduate students receive financial aid from the University.

The additional funds also will support investments in academic and student programs, salary and benefit increases for Northwestern faculty and staff, and improvements and maintenance of the University’s facilities and information technology systems.  

Northwestern will continue its policy of “need-blind” admission for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, in which a student’s ability to pay is not considered during the admission process.

The undergraduate student athletic fee will increase to $41 next year from $39 this year.  The student activity fee will increase to $150 from $144.  The student health fee remains at $200. The premium for students participating in the University’s voluntary student health insurance program will increase 5.0 percent.

Graduate school tuition also will increase by 4.4 percent to $41,592 next year. Tuition for the Feinberg School of Medicine, the Kellogg School of Management and the Law School will be finalized later this spring.
