A Geologist Looks at Events in Japan

EVANSTON, Ill. --- A lecture exploring the deadly March 11 earthquake in Japan and the tsunami and radiation problems that followed will take place Tuesday, March 29, at Northwestern University.

“Japan: The Earthquake, the Tsunami (and the Nuclear Plant)” will be delivered by Emile Okal, Northwestern professor of earth and planetary sciences in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, at 6:30 p.m. in Harris Hall Auditorium, 1881 Sheridan Road, on the Evanston campus. Free and open to the public, it will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

Okal, whose research interests include seismology and tsunamis, will briefly review the general framework of the earthquake’s occurrence. He also will explain why the tsunami then occurred, and Japan’s successes and failures in dealing with the tsunami that is the nation’s deadliest in more than a century.
