Project Pumpkin 2010 Brings Trick-or-Treaters to Campus

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Halloween spirit will transform Norris University Center into a three-hour indoor carnival of candy, games and fun for area children when Project Pumpkin returns to Northwestern University Thursday, Oct. 28. The annual fall event is sponsored by the Northwestern Community Development Corps (NCDC).

Trick-or-treating and dozens of other activities will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., at Norris Center, 1999 Campus Drive, on the University’s Evanston campus. Project Pumpkin is free and open to the public. Northwestern faculty and staff are encouraged to bring their children.

Project Pumpkin was introduced in the late 1980s, and it continues to grow every year. It is one of the largest student-run community service projects at Northwestern.

Approximately 800 to 1,000 children, aged 4 to 12, are expected at Project Pumpkin this year, and many will arrive dressed in their Halloween costumes. Participants come from Evanston and Chicago-area schools, after-school programs, community centers and social service organizations.

Activities include braving a Haunted House, playing games and working on crafts. Northwestern student volunteers from dozens of student groups, on-campus residences and Greek organizations host activity booths, wear costumes and chaperone the youngsters around Norris.

The Northwestern Community Development Corps is a student organization at Northwestern that engages in community service projects at Northwestern, in Evanston, Chicago and surrounding communities.

Northwestern Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences senior Kolby White and School of Communication senior Manisha Taparia are the co-chairs of this year’s event.
