By Alan K. Cubbage

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Jeffrey Glassroth, M.D., the president and CEO of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation and vice dean of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a professor of medicine, has been named interim dean of Feinberg, effective Jan. 1, 2011, Northwestern President Morton Schapiro and Provost Daniel Linzer announced today.

Dr. Glassroth has been president and chief executive officer of the Faculty Foundation, the 700-member faculty practice of Feinberg, since January 2010. He also holds the administrative roles of vice dean and chief academic officer for Feinberg.

J. Larry Jameson, M.D., Ph.D., currently the vice president for medical affairs and the Lewis Landsberg dean, recently announced that he has accepted the position of executive vice president and dean of the school of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania beginning July 1, 2011. He will continue to serve as vice president for medical affairs and dean emeritus after Jan. 1, 2011.

“I’m very pleased that Dr. Glassroth has agreed to serve as interim dean for Feinberg,” President Schapiro said. “He and Dr. Jameson will work closely during this transitional period, and I’m confident that Dr. Glassroth will provide strong leadership for the medical school, as he has for the faculty foundation, while Dr. Jameson will continue to participate in strategic planning for Feinberg and the University.”

Dr. Glassroth first joined what was then called Northwestern University Medical School in 1981 as an assistant professor of medicine. He was later promoted to professor of medicine and the Gilbert H. Marquardt Professor of Internal Medicine. He went on to become vice chair in the department of medicine and associate dean for clinical/academic affairs.

After Dr. Glassroth left Northwestern in 1995, he held department chairs at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison, Wis., and the Allegheny University of the Health Sciences (now known as Drexel University College of Medicine) in Philadelphia, Pa. Before rejoining Northwestern in 2007, he was vice dean and professor of medicine at Tufts.

Dr. Glassroth’s research interests relate to lung infections, particularly tuberculosis. He has focused on the prevention, diagnosis and general epidemiology of lung infections, including those related to HIV infection. He has authored numerous publications and also is co-editor of a major textbook on lung infections and a co-editor of Baum’s Textbook of Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Glassroth is a past president of the 13,000-member American Thoracic Society and of the Association of Professors of Medicine.

A search committee for the new dean of Feinberg will be formed in the near future.

“Provost Linzer and I appreciate the input that we have received regarding the plans for new leadership at Feinberg,” President Schapiro said. “As we begin our transition to a new dean for Feinberg, we will continue to work closely with the Faculty Foundation and our hospital partners and their respective leaders to advance our ambitious goals for Northwestern Medicine and align our missions.”
