Visiting Art Curator and Writer to Lecture at Block Museum

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Internationally renowned curator and writer Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev will be the guest speaker at Northwestern University this fall as part of the department of art theory and practice 2010-11 Visiting Artists Program.

Christov-Bakargiev will present her lecture, “The Dance Was Very Frenetic – notes towards ‘documenta 13,’” at noon, Monday, Oct. 4, at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Drive, on the University’s Evanston campus. Her talk is free and open to the public.

During her talk, she will discuss her curation of one of the world’s foremost contemporary art exhibitions, “documenta 13,” scheduled to take place from June 9 through Sept. 16, 2012, in Kassel, Germany.

Christov-Bakargiev works as a curator and writer in Rome, Turin and New York. In March 2008, she was unanimously elected the artistic director of the “documenta 13” 2012 exhibition.

She was the senior curator at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, a Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) affiliate, before becoming the chief curator at the Castello di Rivoli Museum for Contemporary Art in Torino, Italy.

Christov-Bakargiev has written extensively on contemporary art, and her publications include “William Kentridge” (1998) and “Arte Povera” (1999).

Her exhibitions include “The Moderns” (2003), “Faces in the Crowd” (2004) and the first edition of the Turin Triennale (2005). She was the artistic director of the 16th Biennale of Sydney, “Revolutions – Forms That Turn” (2008).
