David Van Zandt To Step Down

Law School dean will become president of The New School in New York City

David E. Van Zandt will step down as dean of Northwestern University School of Law at the end of December. After serving as dean of the law school for the last 15 years and as a faculty member since 1985, he will leave the University to become president of The New School in New York City.

We greatly appreciate David’s leadership at the law school during a time of dramatic change in the legal profession. Building upon a strategic plan implemented in 1998, he has led continual efforts to analyze the legal market to maximize our graduates’ success. The resulting initiatives for students, along with the faculty focus on discipline-based research that furthers understanding of law and legal institutions, have set the law school apart. Under his leadership, Northwestern Law has innovated and kept up with big shifts in the law and business worlds and has been pathbreaking in the world of academic research in law, paving the way for David’s successor. We wish him the very best in his next venture.

The University soon will begin a national search for David’s successor. I shortly will be forming a search committee comprised of law school faculty, students and staff, as well as others from the University community. This committee will begin its work early this fall. I anticipate that the search committee will not complete its work in advance of David’s announced departure date in December and, thus, will likely announce the appointment of an interim dean later this fall.

Sincerely,

Provost Daniel Linzer
