High School Students Get a Taste of Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Affectionately called “Cherubs,” the outstanding high school students seen all around campus are spending about a month of their summer vacations getting an intense preview of college life.

Part of the National High School Institute’s (NHSI) summer program, the students from all over the nation are doing challenging work in one of six divisions: debate, speech, journalism, music, film and video production, and theatre arts.

Working with faculty and professionals in each field, the students attend college-level classes, workshops, field trips projects and lectures. And, living in dorms and eating in dining halls, they get a real sense of college life.  

For the last 70 years, the National High School Institute has brought together some of the best high school students in the nation to Northwestern’s campus. All Cherubs will leave campus by Aug. 14, and NHSI will start accepting applications for the 2011 program next spring.
