Alumnae Honors Founder of Guatemala Food Program

International volunteer Sandy Neville Haggart recognized for creating Feed the Dream program

Sandy Neville Haggart, an international volunteer whose Feed the Dream program serves a thousand Guatemalans each day, will be honored with the 2010 Northwestern University Alumnae Award.

The Alumnae of Northwestern University will host a public reception at 2 p.m. Oct. 3 in Hardin Hall on the Evanston campus. Haggart joins a list of 33 past recipients of the annual award given to outstanding alumnae who have made significant contributions in their field and attained national recognition.

Haggart created Feed the Dream to address nutrition and quality of life issues in remote areas of Guatemala. Feed the Dream hires local educators and agriculture experts to teach villagers about nutrition, hygiene, water purification and how to cultivate diverse, nutrition-rich crops.

Before developing Feed the Dream, Haggart served as an international volunteer and translator for medical missions in the Philippines and Guatemala. At Northwestern she studied Spanish and education in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, graduating in 1965. She earned a master's degree in Spanish in 1969.
