Lowenstein Speaks About Documentary Photography Today

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Photojournalist Jon Lowenstein - whose work has won him an Alicia Patterson Fellowship and the 2007 Getty Award for Editorial Images - will discuss documentary photography Monday, April 19, at Northwestern University.

Part of the popular Crain Lecture Series presented by Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, Lowenstein's speech will take place at 4 p.m. in the McCormick Tribune Center Forum, 1870 Campus Drive, on the University's Evanston campus. It is free and open to the public.

A professional photographer for more than a decade, Lowenstein specializes in long-term, in-depth projects that illuminate issues of power, poverty and violence. In his documentary work, Lowenstein says he strives for unsparing clarity. He believes that visual images make a critical contribution in revealing history's voiceless subjects.

A member of NOOR, an international photojournalist collective based in Amsterdam, Lowenstein is the author of two forthcoming books, "Shadow Lives USA" and "SouthSide." Both will be published next year.

In a multimedia presentation titled "Consequences," Lowenstein will discuss his current work, including work from Haiti. He also will talk about a NOOR exhibition launched by the United Nations' Summit Conference on Climate Change.

Lowenstein's remarks at Northwestern also will address technique, ethics and the future of long-form documentary photography in today's ever-shifting journalism landscape.

As a member of NOOR, Lowenstein is dedicated to contributing to a growing understanding of the world by producing independent and in-depth visual reports that influence social change and have a positive impact on our understanding of human rights and other global issues.
