Author Paul Loeb to Speak on Civic Engagement April 19

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Paul Rogat Loeb, a noted speaker and writer, will speak at three events on Northwestern's Evanston campus on Monday, April 19. His visit to Northwestern inaugurates the Gregg A. Kindle Distinguished Lecture series.

Loeb is the author of award-winning books on civic engagement. He has spoken at more than 300 colleges and universities. Loeb wrote the book "Soul of a Citizen,"which has sold more than 10,000 copies worldwide since it was published 10 years ago. An updated edition will be published this month. Loeb has garnered praise encouraging students to engage in political and social engagement and exploring how university faculty and staff can help them in this process.

The first lecture, titled "Teaching for Engagement," will be held at 10 a.m. at University Hall, room 102, 1897 Sheridan Road, Evanston campus. The second lecture, titled "Promoting Civic Engagement," will be held at 2 p.m. at the Fiedler Hillel Center Conference Room, 629 Foster St., Evanston. The third lecture, titled "Living with Conviction in Challenging Times: Why Civic Engagement Matters," will be held at the Technological Institute, Ryan Family Auditorium, 2145 Sheridan Road, Evanston.

Loeb's lecture will be the first in an annual series of lectures honoring the legacy of Kindle, who was the director of residential life and assistant dean of students at Northwestern from 1986 to 2003. His commitment to students was deep and reflected in his tireless efforts with student initiatives, like the SafeRide program, the LGBT support network and anti-sexual assault education.
