Anti-Semitism's British New Wave

Klutznick lecturer Anthony Julius to discuss anti-Semitism in the 21st century

By Wendy Leopold
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Anthony Julius, author of a provocative new book on the new wave of anti-Semitism in England, will deliver the annual Philip M. and Ethel Klutznick Lecture Monday, May 3, at Northwestern University.

Julius' lecture, titled "Anti-Semitism in the 21st Century: A Growing Threat," is sponsored by the University's Crown Family Center for Jewish Studies and by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. It will take place in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive, on the Evanston campus.

Admission to the public lecture is free, but reservations are suggested. Light refreshments will be served after the event.

Julius, a British lawyer and author, has achieved distinction both in the practice of law and the fight against global anti-Semitism. As an attorney, he perhaps is best remembered for his representation of Diana, Princess of Wales in her divorce case. He is vice president of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

In another high profile case, Julius represented American historian Deborah Lipstadt, author of "Denying the Holocaust," and Penguin, her publisher. The British writer David
Irving -- notorious for his denial of the Holocaust -- sued Lipstadt for libel for writing that "scholars have described Irving as a ‘Hilter partisan wearing blinkers.'"

The author of "T.S. Eliot, Anti-Semitism and Literary Form," Julius is author of "Trials of the Diaspora: A History of Anti-Semitism in England," a newly published book from Oxford University Press.

Julius is deputy chairman of the London law firm Mishcon de Reya, where for many years he served as director of litigation. He also is a visiting professor in the English department of London University's Birkbeck College.

Philip M. and Ethel Klutznick established the Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization in 1986 at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. At the same time, they provided funds to inaugurate a lecture co-sponsored by Northwestern and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.
