Lights Out for Climate Change

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 27, to raise awareness for climate change.

From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., local time, individuals are encouraged to turn off the lights in a global movement to promote practices that support a cleaner and more energy-efficient world.

Northwestern is one of 24 Illinois universities participating in the event. Last year, nearly one billion people in more than 4,000 cities switched lights off. Iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building, the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Las Vegas Strip also went dark.

Also in 2009, ComEd reported energy savings equal to removing 154,500 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or planting 19 acres of trees.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's largest conservation organizations, sponsors Earth Hour. The WWF hopes it will galvanize public opinion and foster social change.
