Cristina Henríquez (WCAS99) of Chicago won first place in Northwestern magazine's first short fiction contest. Henríquez's story, "The Invitation," was one of 134 entries submitted by Northwestern alumni and students from around the world. Stuart Dybek, Distinguished Writer in Residence and visiting English professor, selected the winners in a blind review process in which the authors' names were removed from the manuscripts before the judging. Read a related Q and A with Dybek.

Danielle Burhop, a current School of Continuing Studies student from Evanston, won second place with her submission, "Peppercorn."

Ying Zhu Chin (McC07), a graduate student in humanities at New York University who is originally from Malaysia, won third place with her story, "When Starbucks Came."

All three winners took creative writing classes in either the English department at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences or in the School of Continuing Studies.

Dybek said he was delighted to judge the contest because it was an opportunity not only to reward three very deserving writers but also to call attention to Northwestern University's long tradition of supporting the writing arts.
