More Than Just a Dream

After a week-long program of events in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, the Northwestern community gathered for a candlelight vigil on the night of Jan. 18 to conclude the official celebration of the late civil rights leader.

The vigil was presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and held at Alice Millar Chapel.

Keynote speaker Dr. Marc Lamont Hill explored how Dr. King would view modern issues of inequality in American society. He also delivered an impassioned plea for personal responsibility on the part of ordinary citizens combined with civil rights activism. An associate professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University, Hill has provided commentary for media outlets such as the Washington Post, NPR and Fox News.

The Northwestern Community Ensemble and Soul 4 Real performed musical selections, and University Chaplain Timothy Stevens delivered the invocation.

Senior Jonathan Bragg presided over the candlelight ceremony, reading excerpts from one of Dr. King's speeches.
