Dance Magazine Editor to Discuss Dance Journalism

Dance Program will host Feb. 18 dance and journalism talk by Wendy Perron

By Judy Moore
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Wendy Perron, editor-in-chief of Dance Magazine, a "must-read" monthly print and online magazine for professional and aspiring dancers, will discuss dance, journalism and related topics during a special winter event presented by Northwestern University's Dance Program.

Titled "What Is Dance Journalism?," the talk will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 18, in the Ballroom of the Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center, 10 Arts Circle Drive, on Northwestern's Evanston campus. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

In addressing topics of interest in dance and journalism, Perron will focus on new directions in both dance and media, the writer/editor relationship, the "story" part of a feature story, the synergy of text and image, the rhythms of writing and of dance, and the changing role of the Internet.

Perron, who is based in New York, has had a 30-year career as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and writer. She directed her own dance company from 1983 to 1997 and taught modern dance technique, composition, improvisation, criticism and dance history at Princeton University, New York University and other universities.

Perron, who has written for The New York Times, Village Voice and other publications, developed a course in dance writing taught at New York's Dance Theater Workshop, one of America's preeminent performing arts institutions. A former associate director of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in New York, she now is the artistic adviser to the Fall for Dance Festival, presented annually by New York City Center to introduce new audiences to dance.
