December 2009 Theatre/Dance Calendar

EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Theatre and Interpretation Center (TIC) at Northwestern University, will present a special two-night holiday cabaret featuring some of Chicago's leading music theatre performers (Dec. 7 and 8). A concert presented by the School of Communication's Dance Program will spotlight a new work by choreographer Jaema Joy Berry (Dec. 4 and 5).

DECEMBER 2009 THEATRE

"Holiday Divas," 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, and 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, Ethel M. Barber Theater, 30 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston campus. This two-night-only cabaret will feature Chicago's top music theatre divos and divas -- including Ross Lehman, Susan Moniz and Hollis Resnik -- performing holiday classics. It will be directed by David H. Bell, associate professor of music theatre and an award-winning professional director, and co-hosted by Cindy Gold, associate professor of theatre in Northwestern's School of Communication and professional actor, and Chicago actor, singer, dancer and comedian Bernie Yvon. Tickets are $30 for the general public; $25 for TIC Mainstage subscribers; and $22 for seniors 65 and older, Northwestern faculty and staff, and area educators and administrators. Student "rush" tickets will be available on the day of each performance, subject to ticket availability. The price of student tickets is yet to be determined. DECEMBER 2009 DANCE

Premiere of Jaema Joy Berry's, "You Can't Dance Out the Side of Your Mouth," 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3; 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4; and 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, in the Ballroom Theater of the Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center, 10 Arts Circle Drive, on Northwestern's Evanston campus. Emerging independent Chicago choreographer and Northwestern alumna Jaema Joy Berry will showcase her sleek style of "visually-designed" modern dance with some jazz elements. Her quirky and nostalgic work explores family relationships and the easy connections made by small children. The program will be performed by Berry and a small ensemble of contemporary, modern and tap dancers, including Northwestern Dance Program students and alumni. It is set to music from diverse sources, including French composer Yann Tiersen; the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Ros; classical works by J.S. Bach; and an original composition by Chicago-based composer and Northwestern University Theatre and Interpretation Center staff accompanist Daniel Green. The 70-minute piece will be performed without an intermission. General seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. General admission is $12; $5 for students with valid IDs and senior citizens 65 and older.
