Writer Angela Jackson to Read From Her Just-Published Novel

Jackson, who was born in Mississippi, raised in Chicago and educated at Northwestern and the University of Chicago, will take questions from the audience after the reading. The free and public event will take place at Northwestern’s Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities in Room 2-360 of Kresge Centennial Hall, 1880 Campus Drive, Evanston campus.

Titled “Where I Must Go” and published by Northwestern University Press, Jackson’s long-awaited novel is set in academic year 1967-68 at a privileged and racially exclusive university, in the black neighborhoods of a Midwestern city and in Mississippi. Its characters -- black and white, male and female, young and old, privileged and deprived -- struggle to understand the history they are living and making during that tumultuous, historical year.

Winner of the 1994 Carl Sandburg Award for Poetry and 1993 Chicago Sun-Times Award in Poetry, Jackson is the author of numerous poetry anthologies including “Dark Legs and Silk Kisses: The Beatitudes of the Spinners” (1993) and “And All These Roads Be Luminous” (1997) which earned a nomination for the National Book Award. Both were published by TriQuarterly Books/Northwestern University Press.

Jackson emerged as a poet during the Black Arts Movement while studying at Northwestern in the late 1960s and was part of Chicago’s Organization of Black American Culture which promoted the city’s burgeoning black literary scene.
