Memorial Service for Marcus Alexis Oct. 3

Northwestern celebrates life of professor of economics, management, African American studies

By Wendy Leopold
EVANSTON, Ill. --- A memorial service celebrating the life of Marcus Alexis, long-time professor of economics, management, and African American studies at Northwestern University and one of the nation's most distinguished economists, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road, Evanston campus. A reception will follow in the Guild Lounge in Scott Hall, 601 University Place. Alexis died in late May.

In 1994, Alexis said he was drawn to the field of economics "as an effective way to change the world around me." He succeeded not only through his scholarly contributions but also through service as chair of Northwestern's economics department, dean of the School of Business at the University of Illinois at Chicago and chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
