James Joyce Quarterly Editor to Deliver Segal Humanities Lecture

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Sean Latham, professor of English at the University of Tulsa and editor of the James Joyce Quarterly, will deliver this year's Carole and Gordon Segal Visiting Professor of the Humanities Lecture Wednesday, April 29, at Northwestern University.

The free and public lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in Chambers Hall, 600 Foster Street, on the University's Evanston Campus.

Latham's lecture will employ the resources of law, sociology, and eco-criticism to examine the ways in which Joyce attempts to imagine Ireland less as a nation than as a turbulent and unstable space in which new, globally aware collectivities can be formed. From the "dirty" writing that got Ulysses banned as well as the ever-present grime of "dear, dirty Dublin," Latham imagines the still resonant possibilities of Ireland.

Co-director of the National Endowment for the Humanities-sponsored Modernist Journals Project, Latham writes and teaches in the areas of media studies, modernism, periodical studies, and literature and the law. He is the author or editor of five book and monographs, including "Am I a Snob? Modernism and the Novel" (Cornell 2003), "Joyce's Modernism" (National Library of Ireland, 2004) and "The Art of Scandal: Modernism, Libel Law, and the Roman a Clef" (Oxford, 2009).

Latham also is a trustee of the International James Joyce Foundation, co-editor of the Journal of Modern Periodical Studies, and president of the Modernist Studies Association. Latham's lecture is co-sponsored by Northwestern's Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and department of English.
