Experience Authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony with Zen Arts Master

By Wendy Leopold
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Zen arts master Shozo Sato will celebrate the arrival of Spring with a tea ceremony demonstration and tasting Sunday, April 19, at Northwestern University.

Participants who would like to sample a cup of authentic Maccha tea are advised to arrive at the event with a full stomach to best enjoy the strong, traditional Japanese green tea. The demonstration and tasting will take place at 1 p.m. in the McCormick Auditorium of Norris Student Center, 1999 Campus Drive, on Northwestern's Evanston campus.

In 2004, Sato was awarded the highest honor in Japanese arts from the Emperor of Japan. Educated in Japan, he received the highest diplomas available in classical tea ceremony, flower arrangement and dance. In theatre, Sato is known worldwide for his Kabuki adaptations of the plays of Shakespeare and Greek classicists.

A professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Sato founded and for many years directed a Japanese cultural center at that university. This spring, he is teaching two courses at Northwestern -- one on calligraphy and the other on the history and practice of Japanese and Chinese ink painting.

The tea ceremony demonstration and tasting are sponsored by Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and Asian and Middle East Studies Program.
