Dittmar Gallery to Showcase Undergraduate Students' Works

By Judy Moore
EVANSTON, Ill. --- The paintings, prints, photography, drawings, sculpture and video of undergraduate students enrolled in Northwestern University's department of art theory and practice will be on view at the Dittmar Memorial Gallery during the Senior Art Show 2009 exhibition, "Progression."

The exhibition will be open to the public from May 14 through June 19. The public also is invited to attend an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the gallery, which is located on the first floor of Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive, on Northwestern's Evanston campus. The exhibition and the reception are free.

During their undergraduate years, department of art theory and practice majors contribute to a collective body of work. The range of work in the exhibition reflects the varied approaches to contemporary art-making techniques. A selection of works will be displayed at the Dittmar this spring.

"The faculty members are proud to see the range of work that our undergraduates have produced," said Pamela Bannos, director of Undergraduate Studies for the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences' department of art theory and practice. "We strive to teach the broad array of possibilities of visual expression, and we encourage our students to choose the medium that best represents their ideas."

This year's exhibition features the work of the following students: Renee Calvert, Jasmin Chang, Karinna Gomez, Andrew Karas, Joyce Kim, Sarah-Richelle Lemas, Mary Jo Madda, Yana Myaskovskaya, Debi Nafis, Rachele O'Hare, Lauren Pond, Jillian Putnam, Lauren Redding and Tiffany Wells.

The Dittmar Gallery places emphasis on ethnic cultural art, art by emerging artists, art by or about women, artwork by Northwestern undergraduate art students and traveling art shows.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, call the gallery at (847) 491-2348 or e-mail <dittmargallery@northwestern.edu> or call Norris University Center at (847) 491-2301 or visit http://www.norris.northwestern.edu/dittmar.php.
