January 2009 Theatre Calendar

EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Theatre and Interpretation Center at Northwestern University will continue its 2008-09 season in January with Karen Zacarías' drama "The Sins of Sor Juana" (Jan. 30 to Feb. 8), the story of a feminist nun and poet in 17th century Mexico.

Performances are open to the public and will take place at the Josephine Louis Theater, 20 Arts Circle Drive, on Northwestern's Evanston campus.

Single tickets to all productions may be purchased by phone through the Theatre and Interpretation Center Box Office at (847) 491-7282 or purchased at the door. Tickets also are on sale through the Theatre and Interpretation Center Box Office or at http://www.tic.northwestern.edu.

Optional dinner packages are now available before any performance at two downtown Evanston restaurants. GIO, 1631 Chicago Ave., offers Northern Italian cuisine. A dinner ticket, including an appetizer, entrée, dessert and coffee or tea may be purchased for $20. Tapas Barcelona, 1615 Chicago Ave., offers a wide variety of small plates. A dinner including a selection of assorted tapas, dessert and coffee or tea may be purchased for $25. Prices are exclusive of performance tickets, tax and gratuity. "The Sins of Sor Juana" by Karen Zacarías and directed by Henry Godinez, 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30; 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31; 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1; 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5; 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6; 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, Josephine Louis Theater, 20 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston campus. One of the first published poets of the Americas and a member of a Mexican convent, Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz frustrated the Church with plays and poetry that expressed a feminism centuries ahead of its time. Surrendering to the Church's demand for her silence, her final written words were penned in her own blood -- a vow never to write again. Under the direction of artistic director Henry Godinez, "The Sins of Sor Juana" is a historic fantasy of self-determination and self-expression that explores the life of the 17th century poet and her quest for artistic freedom and social equality. Single tickets are $20 for the general public; $18 for seniors aged 65 and older, Northwestern faculty and staff and area educators and administrators; and $10 for children and full-time students.
