Behind the Scenes of the Northwestern News Network Election Night Coverage

While everyone else was watching the news on election night, student members of the Northwestern News Network (NNN) were busy making it.

NNN teamed with broadcast students from Columbia College and the City Colleges of Chicago to produce a one-hour report for public television station WYCC. Production of the show was headquartered at Medill's broadcast studio in the McCormick Tribune Center and featured live student reports from Barack Obama's election rally in Chicago's Grant Park.

As polls closed and votes were counted, the crew of undergraduate students put the finishing touches on their pre-taped news segments, prepared microphones, lights and cameras, and ran through the script to tweak the timing of the show.

"In the past, the election shows have been done mostly by the Medill grad program and this is the first year that NNN has taken over the helm on this," said Larry Stuelpnagel, an assistant professor at Medill and the group's faculty adviser. "They get a live experience and it's been such a great election. It doesn't get any better than this."

The Emmy Award-winning NNN produces two weekly shows -- the Northwestern News Report and Sports Night -- that air on NU channel 1, Evanston cable channel 6 and online at NNNtv.org.
