Joan Slavin Named to Harassment Prevention Post

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Joan E. Slavin has been named director of the Northwestern University Sexual Harassment Prevention Office and Special Assistant to the Provost.

Slavin, who joined the University Sept. 15, has responsibility for anti-harassment training, sexual harassment policy development, and claims investigation and resolution for students, faculty and staff across the University. She works closely with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access; Human Resources; and Student Affairs, as well as Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Advisers in each school or unit of the University, who are trained to answer questions about the University's sexual harassment policy and to receive a complaint of sexual harassment.

Prior to joining the University, Slavin practiced labor and employment law in Chicago with the firms of Schoeman, Updike, Kaufman & Scharf, Freeborn & Peters, and Sidley & Austin, where she represented private employers in all aspects of employment law, including matters involving employment discrimination and harassment under Title VII, the ADA, and the ADEA. A portion of her law practice was dedicated to preventative counseling and working with clients to avoid litigation through improved management policies and practices, positive employee relations, training, and diversity assessment.

Slavin graduated from the University of Michigan in 1988 with bachelor's degrees in Russian Studies and French. She earned her law degree from Harvard Law School in 1991.
