Mayber, Calkins Promoted In Office Of General Counsel


The promotions, effective Sept. 1, were announced by Thomas G. Cline, Vice President and General Counsel.

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Amy D. Mayber has been promoted to Senior Associate General Counsel for Medical and Health Affairs, and John W. Calkins has been promoted to Associate General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel at Northwestern University.

The promotions, effective Sept. 1, were announced by Thomas G. Cline, Vice President and General Counsel.

Mayber joined the office as Associate General Counsel in February 1995. Prior to that, she was Counsel at the Chicago firm of Sidley & Austin (now Sidley Austin). In that capacity, she frequently represented Northwestern University in malpractice cases and on other cases involving medical and health questions. A graduate of Indiana University and IIT/Chicago-Kent College of Law, Mayber was a judicial law clerk for Chief Justice Thomas J. Moran of the Illinois Supreme Court.

Her portfolio within the Office of General Counsel includes all medical and health-related matters, general litigation, research safety, and contract review. She also serves as staff to Rubicon, the University's captive insurance company, and is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys.

Calkins started in the Office of General Counsel as Assistant General Counsel in May 2005. Previously, he was Counsel at Bingham McCutchen in San Francisco, where he handled intellectual property clearance, prosecution, strategic counseling, enforcement, litigation, and other transactional matters.

At Northwestern, Calkins is responsible for issues involving intellectual property, student affairs, technology transfer, information technology, and contracts. He is a graduate of Williams College and the University of Virginia School of Law, and is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
