Summer 2008 Faculty and Guest Artist Recitals Announced

By Judy Moore
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Several members of the Northwestern University School of Music's faculty and a special guest artist will present summer recitals on the Evanston campus. The recitals are free and open to the public.

All the programs will be held at one of three Evanston campus venues, as noted below:

The National High School Music Institute (NHSMI) Faculty Musicale at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, will be held at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive. The program will feature Northwestern faculty involved with the intensive five-week NHSMI. Led by artistic director Daniel J. Farris, a member of the School of Music's music performance department, the NHSMI is one of seven divisions of Northwestern's National High School Institute. The highly selective music division admits about 180 young musicians who study, participate in master classes and seminars, take field trips to premier Chicago music venues and perform in large and small ensembles.

Rex Martin, professor of tuba and euphonium at Northwestern's School of Music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, in Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive. A Swiss citizen, he has performed and taught throughout North America, the Far East and Europe.

Guest tubist Gene Pokorny will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, in Regenstein Recital Hall. Appointed to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Arnold Jacobs Principal Tuba Chair by Sir Georg Solti in 1988, Pokorny previously played in the Israel Philharmonic, Utah Symphony, St. Louis Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras.

Violinist Blair Milton will be the featured as a School of Music faculty performer during the National High School Music Institute String Faculty Recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, at Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place. The program will feature Bedrich Smetana's Piano Trio in G Minor and other works. Milton is a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a founding member of the Evanston Chamber Ensemble. He originated and directs Northwestern's annual Winter Chamber Music Festival.

Music faculty trombonist Charles Vernon will perform in a solo recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Regenstein Recital Hall. Vernon teaches trombone at Northwestern and DePaul universities and is active as a soloist and teacher throughout the world.
