Japanese Arts Master to Demonstrate Art of Flower Arranging

EVANSTON, Ill. --- A master of traditional Japanese art forms will present a lecture and demonstration on Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging, Saturday, May 10, at Northwestern University.

Shozo Sato will demonstrate how to use flora and materials available in the Chicago area to create contemporary Ikebana arrangements. His free and public presentation will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 108 of Harris Hall, on Northwestern's Evanston campus.

Sato, a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois who founded a Japanese cultural center in Urban-Champaign, was educated in Japan, where he received the highest diplomas available in tea ceremony, flower arrangement and classical dance. In recent years, he received the highest honor in Japanese arts from the Emperor of Japan.

Sato will be available to sign his recently published book, "The Art of Arranging Flowers" at a reception following the lecture demonstration.
