Celebrate Physical Fitness Month With Campus Events

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University is celebrating National Physical Fitness and Sports month in May with a wide variety of events and programs for faculty and staff and the Evanston community, many of them free of charge.

The primary goal of the celebration is to get Northwestern community members to commit to 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least three days each week to help prevent chronic disease and enjoy healthier, longer lives. Participation in this celebration helps encourage individuals to develop lifelong habits of regular physical activity

The following offerings are free:

Trial membership pass good for unrestricted use of fitness facilities, including the sports & aquatics center, Patten Gymnasium, and Blomquist Recreation Center.

Faculty and staff access to all group fitness classes and use of all fitness facilities -- May 16, May 23, May 30.

Healthy weight and blood pressure screenings -- May 16, noon to 1 p.m. and May 17, 10 a.m. to noon.

National Bike to Work Day -- May 16. Free bagels and juice available at the Sports & Aquatics Center (while supplies last) for those who bike to work between 8 and 10 a.m.

Injury and flexibility screenings provided by AthletiCo. -- Tuesday, May 20, 4 to 7 p.m. Pre-registration recommended.

Foot screenings provided by the Foot & Ankle Clinics of America -- May 20, 5 to 7 p.m. Pre-registration recommended.

Thermal foot scans and posture/spinal screenings provided by Chiro One Wellness Centers. May 21, 4 to 7 p.m. and May 24, 10 a.m. to noon. Pre-registration not necessary. Walk-ups encouraged.

National Employee Health and Fitness Day -- May 21. Access to fitness facilities and group fitness classes; healthy weight and blood pressure screenings (5 to 7 p.m.); thermal foot scans provided by Chiro One Wellness Centers (4 to 7 p.m.).

Spinal screenings provided by Alternative Pain Care -- May 23, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Pre-registration recommended.

Active Older Adult Celebration Week -- May 27-June 1. Access to all group fitness classes.

Healthy Heart Checks and refreshments – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 27 and May 29.

Access to PrimeTime Fitness classes -- May 28 and May 30, 7 to 8 a.m. or 10 to 11 a.m. Pre-registration desired.

Active Aging presentation -- Mind/Body Fitness Learn, the benefits of mind/body exercise. May 28, 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Light lunch for those who attend. Pre-registration desired.

Health & Wellness Fair -- May 28, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Recreational Sports Golf Outing -- May 30. The entire Northwestern community is invited to participate in an afternoon of leisure, fun, and prizes during the Rec Sports Golf Outing.

There also will be a Massage Therapy special: Purchase a 30- or 60-minute session, receive a 30- or 60-minute at half-price (offered through June 15).
