President Bienen Issues Statement Regarding Commencement Speaker

Statement by Northwestern University President Henry S. Bienen Regarding the Selection of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley as Northwestern's Commencement Speaker

I would like to reiterate that Northwestern University is honored and proud to have Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley as the University's speaker at its Commencement this year. Mayor Daley is recognized internationally as an innovative and creative big-city mayor who has made Chicago a truly world-class city. His leadership on economic issues and the environment and his taking on the responsibility for the Chicago Public Schools demonstrate his willingness to tackle the key issues that face America's cities in the 21st century. Mayor Daley's international stature is recognized everywhere, most recently with his convening of Arab Mayors in Chicago to discuss issues that cut across state boundaries and are critical to major cities' development. In addition, Mayor Daley has been a leading force for Chicago's Olympic bid.

Because Northwestern is celebrating its 150th Commencement and the University's long ties with Chicago, it is particularly appropriate to have Mayor Daley be our speaker. We are very pleased that he accepted our invitation to be the commencement speaker, particularly since it is not something he does often at universities. I am confident that our graduates and their families will benefit from the insights that I hope he will share with us at Commencement. We very much look forward to welcoming him at that event.
