Symphony Orchestra to Perform Verdi Requiem and Polish Works

By Judy Moore
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Beloved classics by Mahler, Elgar and Verdi, as well as innovative works by Polish composers, are all part of the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra's (NUSO) repertoire this spring.

All three NUSO concerts are open to the public and will take place on the University's Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive.

"A Polish Celebration" is the theme of NUSO's 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 12 concert. Under the baton of music faculty member Victor Yampolsky and featuring violin soloist Alyssa Park, the orchestra will perform Grazyna Bacewicz's "In una parte," Krzysztof Penderecki's Violin Concerto No. 2 ("Metamorphosen") and Witold Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra. Tickets are $12 for the general public, $9 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff, and $6 for students.

Northwestern's symphony orchestra will be joined by the University's Symphonic Chorus for two performances of the Verdi Requiem, Verdi's only large-scale composition not intended for the stage. The Requiem will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31, and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1. Victor Yampolsky will conduct the orchestra and Robert A. Harris will be the chorus master for the performance of this epic work. Tickets are $12 for the general public, $9 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff, and $6 for students.

To purchase tickets by phone, call the Pick-Staiger Ticket Office at (847) 467-4000. Tickets are also available online at http://www.pickstaiger.org.
