Thomas Board Named AVP of Cyber Infrastructure

Thomas Board, 56, of Winnetka has been appointed associate vice president of cyber infrastructure at Northwestern University, effective Feb. 1.

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Thomas Board, 56, of Winnetka has been appointed associate vice president of cyber infrastructure at Northwestern University, effective Feb. 1, it was announced by Mort Rahimi, vice president and chief technology officer.

Reporting to Board are Computing Services and Telecommunications and Network Services, areas that provide central computing, voice, data, and video networking to the campuses.

"As the computing and telecommunication technologies continue to merge into an integrated cyber infrastructure, Tom, with directors Dave Carr and Dana Nielsen, will focus their attention on providing an infrastructure that meets the needs of the University's research, teaching, and administrative community now and in the future," Rahimi said. "He has been in a number of roles within IT and has successfully led many important projects that have enhanced the technology environment at the University."

Board, director of Information Systems Architecture at Information Technology (IT) for the past five years, joined Northwestern in 1976 as a programmer/analyst at the Vogelback Computing Center. He held other positions at Vogelback until 1984 when he was named director of telecommunications for the Northwestern Technologies Group, a joint venture of the University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He eventually led that unit's planning and development efforts, which included the design and installation of the University's fiber-optic data network.

In 1994, Board moved to the user services function in the University's academic computing unit and later served as director of technology support services in the reorganized IT division prior to his most recent position.
