Writers & Writing: Upcoming Events at Center for Writing Arts

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Writer Erik Larson, author of the best-selling "The Devil in the White City," and 2002 Pulitzer Prizewinning author Diane McWhorter are among the headliners in a schedule of events about books and writing planned this winter by Northwestern University's Center for the Writing Arts (CWA).

All events take place in Evanston campus venues and are free and open to the public.

CWA writer-in-residence Alex Kotlowitz, author of "There Are No Children Here," "The Other Side of the River," and "Never a City So Real" will kick off the CWA winter season of reading and writing events Tuesday, Jan. 22, with a reading of his current works and a Q&A session. The event takes place from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. in Room 109 of Harris Hall, 1881 Sheridan Road.

Monday, Jan. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m., a reading in English translation and discussion of "Troubadour Poems from the South of France" by Northwestern faculty William and Frances Paden in Hagstrum Room 201 of University Hall, 1897 Sheridan Road.

Monday, Feb. 4, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., a reading by David Standish, author of "Hollow Earth: The Long and Curious History of Imagining Strange Lands, Fantastical Creatures, Advanced Civilizations and Marvelous Machines Below the Earth's Surface" in Hagstrum Room 201 of University Hall, 1897 Sheridan Road.

Monday, Feb 18, from noon to 1 p.m., a reading by Diane McWhorter, author of "Carry Me Home," a Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the civil rights struggle in McWhorter's native Birmingham in Room 111 of Fisk Hall, 1845 Sheridan Road.

Monday, Feb 25, a discussion on "Reporting on the Past: The Craft of Nonfiction" by Erik Larson. In addition to his bestselling "The Devil in the White City," Larson is author of "Thunderstruck," about a notorious London murder that occurred just before World War I. The event will occur in Room 111 of Fisk Hall, 1845 Sheridan Road.

Tuesday, March 4, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., award-winning public radio independent producer and reporter Joe Richman will join writer, journalist and Northwestern writer-in-residence Alex Kotlowitz in a discussion titled "A Public Conversation: Radio Diaries with Alex Kotlowitz and Joe Richman" in Room 108 of Harris Hall, 1881 Sheridan Road.
