Peace Corps Participation on the Rise

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University has moved up four spots in the top 25 of medium-sized schools for the contributions of its alumni to the Peace Corps.

Thirty-four alumni are serving this year, placing Northwestern at No. 12 and tied with Miami University of Ohio. Since the Peace Corps' inception, 839 alumni have joined, making Northwestern the No. 37 producer of volunteers.

Peace Corps volunteers serve for 27 months around the world in diverse fields such as education, health, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, information technology, business development, the environment and agriculture. Most volunteers are college graduates.

Among medium-sized schools, George Washington University ranked No. 1 this year with 68 volunteers. After 20 years of the University of Wisconsin-Madison being the top producer, the University of Washington is listed No. 1 overall for the first time since 1981 with 110 volunteers serving.
