Informatics Degree Offered, With Online Option

CHICAGO --- Northwestern University will offer the Master of Science in Medical Informatics (MMI) degree program with an online option, beginning in January.

Students from all over the world will have access to Northwestern's world-class faculty and medical informatics industry experts.

The MMI is an 11-course program that focuses on the study and application of principles of information management, design, integration, implementation, and evaluation of enterprise-wide healthcare information systems.

It is offered by Northwestern's School of Continuing Studies in partnership with the University's Feinberg School of Medicine. David Liebovitz, M.D., assistant professor of medicine in the division of general internal medicine at Feinberg; chief medical informatics officer for the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation; and medical director for clinical information systems at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, is the program director.

“The core of this degree program is the marriage of information technology and healthcare. Professionals in this challenging field will have the opportunity to help improve patient care while implementing cost-saving practices that will benefit patients, clinicians and healthcare organizations,” said Liebovitz. “In addition to increased healthcare industry demand, federal government initiatives are driving the need for skilled medical informatics professionals.”

The MMI curriculum is designed for a diverse audience of students, including healthcare professionals such as doctors, clinicians, administrators, educators, and researchers. The program also provides career opportunities for information technology professionals and other qualified individuals who wish to transition into this growing field.

“The online format of the degree facilitates access to Northwestern's exceptional educational opportunities for healthcare and IT professionals throughout the United States,” said Cary Nathenson, assistant dean of graduate programs at the School of Continuing Studies. “With its Feinberg School of Medicine and technologically advanced hospital network, Northwestern is the natural choice for students who wish to become leaders in the Medical Informatics field.”

Faculty of the program participate in setting healthcare standards nationally. Like all School of Continuing Studies professional master's degrees, the MMI program provides students unique opportunities to interact with influential industry decision-makers
