Biographer, Writer and Journalist Landon Jones to Give Reading

By Wendy Leopold

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Landon Y. Jones -- a writer often credited with popularizing the phrase “baby boom generation” -- will give a reading Monday, Oct. 9, at Northwestern University. Jones is the author of a highly acclaimed biography of explorer William Clark, of a book written in 1980 describing the baby boomers, and editor of “The Essential Lewis and Clark,” an abridgement of the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

“Great Expectations: America and the Baby Boom Generation” and “William Clark and the Shaping of the West” wrier Jones will read from his recent non-fiction writing at 5:30 p.m. in Room 108 of Harris Hall, 1881 Sheridan Road, on Northwestern's Evanston campus. The event, sponsored by the University's Center for the Writing Arts, is free and open to the public.

A former Time-Life editorial executive and chief editor of People and Money Magazines, Landon was a board member of the National Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commemoration that ended this month (September) in St. Louis in the same location the 8,000 mile Lewis and Clark expedition came to a close 200 years ago.

Landon is at Northwestern as the fall quarter writer-in-residence at the Center for the Writing Arts. The Center was established in 1993 to foster and build upon the University's already substantial resources in writing and to bring writers and writing instructors from its many schools. Its first visiting writer was Ann Beattie in 1994. Since then it has brought in writers, including Richard Ford, Jules Pfeiffer, Sara Paretsky, Alex Kotlowitz and Arthur Golden, who have taught writing to a select group of undergraduates.
