Librarian Walton Receives Brodman Award

Linda Walton, associate director of the Galter Health Sciences Library at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, has received the Medical Library Association’s (MLA) 2006 Estelle Brodman Award for the academic medical librarian of the year.

The award is named in honor of Estelle Brodman, library director emerita of the Washington University School of Medicine Beckman Library. Brodman was a leader and scholar of the medical library profession, serving as MLA president and on the MLA Board of Directors. The award was established in 1986 to recognize an academic medical librarian at mid-career level who demonstrates significant achievement, potential for leadership and continuing excellence.

Walton has played key roles at Northwestern in securing a number of grants for the Galter Library, which help advance the role of the librarian in information access services, including one from the National Library of Medicine in 2004, which helped develop the Galter Health SmartLibrary.

She was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the MLA Board of Directors and will assume the position of treasurer in 2007. She served as co-chair of MLA’s 2005 National Program Committee and has held various leadership positions within the MLA organization, such chair of the grants and scholarship committee and chair of the development section.

Before joining Northwestern in 1977, Walton held numerous administrative library positions, including project coordinator for the Wisconsin Area Health Education Center and director of the Butler Hospital library in Providence, R.I. She also worked for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, a regional outreach program for the National Library of Medicine.
