Guitarists David Russell and Robert Guthrie to Perform

EVANSTON, Ill. --- This spring, Northwestern University continues to celebrate the diversity of the guitar with the Chicago area’s only full season of classical guitar artists: the 2005-06 Segovia Classical Guitar Series.

Supported by the Chicago Classical Guitar Society, the Segovia Series offers two remaining concerts that will be held at different locations on the University’s Evanston campus.

Classical guitarist David Russell will share his superb musicianship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive. Named a fellow of London’s Royal Academy of Music in 1997, Russell received a 2003 Medal of Honor from the conservatory of the Balearics. He won the 2005 Grammy Award as best classical instrumental soloist for his compact disc “Aire Latino.” Russell’s program will include works by Giuliani, Da Milano, Granados, Dowland and Mertz.

Texas-born guitarist Robert Guthrie will perform the colorful music of Spain and Latin America during the final program of this season’s Segovia series. Guthrie’s concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place. Guthrie studied with Andrés Segovia and Jesus Silva at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He has toured throughout the United States, Spain and Latin America and has taught at Yale University, the Boston Conservatory and Southern Methodist University. Guthrie’s program will feature works by Barrios, Garcia de Leon, Sanz and Almeida.

Tickets for each of the remaining Segovia Series concerts are $19 for the general public, $16 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff, and $8 for students.
