Kellogg Team Wins Marketing Competition

A team of three Kellogg School women earned first place and $5,000 in the sixth annual Rice University Marketing Case Competition held last month in Houston.

Seven teams from U.S. business schools, including the Haas School of Business at University of California at Berkeley, the University of Chicago, Yale University and the Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice, were challenged to make recommendations about how to increase revenues for Kinko’s.

The case presented teams with the option of focusing on corporate accounts or the retail stores. “We recommended that Kinko’s choose to focus on local businesses that use their retail stores,” said Leslie Murray, who worked with Class of 2007 teammates Christine Anthony and Joann Park to prepare their presentation in an intense 24 hours.

The team said the material and case approach taught in Marketing Management was similar to the Kinko’s case, giving them a solid foundation to approach the assignment. “The judges told us that our understanding of the strategic issues and the clearly communicated ideas in our presentation were what won the competition.”
