Continuing Studies Program Targets White Collar Crime

CHICAGO --- The Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is launching a new certificate program, “Investigation and Prevention of Commercial Fraud.”

This program, which begins Feb. 2, is designed for professionals who need to meet the growing challenges associated with internal fraud and to understand the laws that govern prevention and investigation of white-collar crime.

A heightened awareness of corporate and individual white-collar fraud has created an increased demand for professionals with the skills and training necessary to detect and investigate financial fraud. The “Investigation and Prevention of Commercial Fraud” certificate program is designed to meet the needs of professionals intent on expanding their skills and knowledge in the anti-fraud arena, educate them on the inner workings of fraud schemes, and prepare them to prevent, detect and investigate financial fraud.

The curriculum is designed for audit committee members, executive management and owners of small and mid-sized companies, accountants, internal auditors, attorneys, law enforcement and government investigators, and career changers that have an interest in this growing field. Topics in the program include Introduction to Commercial Crime, Interviewing and Interrogation, Electronic Data Investigations, Commercial Fraud Prevention, Criminology and the Legal Elements of Commercial Crime Fraud Examination Techniques.

Susan Henry, program advisor and instructor, points out that “professionals responsible for investigating and preventing fraud within their organizations need critical resources, beyond standard academic studies and on the job training, to maximize their effectiveness.” She said, “This program will provide a foundation for individuals to learn best practices in fraud investigation and prevention from top instructors in the industry."

The six-week courses that begin Feb. 2 are held in the evening at Northwestern’s loop location. 210 S. Clark St. Students may register for individual courses through the first day of class. Completion of any four of the six courses is required to earn a certificate from the Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies.
