Corporate Counsel Institute Is Dec. 1-2

By Pat Vaughan Tremmel

CHICAGO --- Prominent general counsel from across the nation will gather in San Francisco to focus on the general counsel’s role in financial management at the 44th annual Corporate Counsel Institute.

The institute will take place Dec. 1 and 2 at the Hotel Nikko, 222 Mason Street, San Francisco.

The annual program addresses current challenges facing in-house counsel and provides updates on recent developments in the law. Developed by general counsel from leading corporations, this year’s program provides a format for attendees to share experiences and mutual concerns. They will be given a chance to ask questions to find out how peers are handling tough challenges.

Auditors, accountants and experienced general counsel will discuss topics such as managing the audit process, implementing internal financial controls and knowing when to recommend outside counsel. They will also discuss financial disclosure and governance issues that surfaced for Enron and WorldCom and what today’s general counsel can do to detect such problems.

To address updates on recent developments in the law that affect corporations, legal experts also will discuss changes in electronic records and discovery, M & A, tort reform and employment law.

The Boeing Company, Chevron Corporation, Experian Information Solutions, Washington Mutual Card Services and eBay Inc. are among the top companies whose general counsel and executives will be represented at the institute.

As a program sponsored by Northwestern University School of Law, the Corporate Counsel Institute is recognized for mandatory continuing legal education credit in most states.
