Discrimination Policy Is Revised

The University has revised its discrimination policy to make clear that harassment based on any protected group status is prohibited.

The policy applies to harassment based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, age, disability, or veteran status — and two new protected groups, citizenship and parental status.

While the University has always prohibited harassment, the policy language has been revised to make it clearer, according to Provost Lawrence B. Dumas.

The policy is described in the brochure, "What You Should Know About Discrimination and Harassment, Including Sexual Harassment," that has been distributed to all faculty and staff. (The policy appears on page 0 of this issue of the Northwestern Observer.)

Dumas also announced that the University has expanded the role of the sexual harassment resolution officers — now called discrimination and harassment prevention advisors — to include issues of discrimination and harassment.  Responsibility for these issues is consistent with the role most resolutions officers have played in their department or administrative unit.

Marcia Mahoney, director of the sexual harassment prevention office, and Michael Powell, director of EEO/AA, have conducted training sessions for the discrimination and harassment advisors and will work with them to resolve any complaints.

They also have provided training on discrimination, harassment and sexual harassment to faculty and staff. Training has been completed in McCormick, Kellogg and Law and is continuing in Feinberg and Weinberg.
