New Campus Security Measures Implemented

Northwestern has made several improvements in its transportation services and increased our campus security forces. Starting this fall, the University Police Department will add three officers to help patrol the Evanston campus and those areas near campus that are frequented by Northwestern students. UP also will augment this force with University Police officers from the Chicago campus on busy weekends and other times as necessary.

Other key measures recently taken include:

• Increasing the number of vehicles available for the Escort Service, with University employees available to drive those vehicles.

• Continuing to use private security officers at night to back up University Police in patrolling Northwestern’s campus on foot and in golf carts, thereby providing a highly visible security presence.

• Installing new emergency telephones. The phones will be located at 1800 Maple Ave.; outside Engelhart Hall at Maple and Emerson St.; in the Engelhart parking lot at Maple and Foster St.; and on Orrington Ave. just west of Foster-Walker  Housing Complex.

• Installing surveillance cameras in the Engelhart Hall parking lot, which is located at Foster Street and Maple Avenue, in the neighborhood west of campus.

• Increasing service on the Purple Route, the main campus shuttle bus route, on Thursday–Saturday, so the bus will run every 15 minutes during evening hours. In addition, the route will begin service at 6 p.m. starting Nov. 1 when daylight saving time ends. This route provides service every night until 3 a.m. to the residence halls on campus, the library, student center, sports and aquatics center and other areas both on and near campus.
