University Is Hot School in Kaplan/Newsweek College Guide

Northwestern University was named one of “America’s 25 Hot Schools” in the 2005 Kaplan/Newsweek “How To Get into College” Guide.

The selection of Northwestern as tops in the Big Ten was based on admissions trends and extensive interviews with educators, admissions officers, students and other longtime observers of the admissions process.

Kaplan/Newsweek said the applicant pool for the “hot” schools has grown much stronger in recent years—not only in sheer numbers of students applying, but also in test scores, grades, and extracurricular accomplishments. The publication said the “Hot Schools” deserve individual recognition for their choice attributes, such as specialty programs, state-of-the-art facilities, or comprehensive financial-aid packages.

Kaplan provides educational and career services for individual, schools, and businesses. It has more than 3,000 classroom locations in the U.S. and abroad and has served well over 3 million students in its courses for 35 standardized tests, including entrance exams for secondary school, college, and graduate school as well as English language and professional licensing exams.

The Aug. 23 issue of Newsweek carries this description of Northwestern:

“With six undergraduate schools, Northwestern attracts budding actors, journalists, engineers and teachers -- along with plenty of liberal-arts students still unsure of what to major in. Each school has a national reputation. Some standouts: the Medill School of Journalism, the School of Communication (which includes the drama and theatre program) and the engineering school, which is a center of research in nanotechnology. When they’re not studying, Northwestern students can take in Wildcats football or head into nearby Chicago.”
